The Olympic torch relay kicked off in Fukushima, Japan, starting a four-month countdown to the Tokyo Olympics.

It will travel through all of the country’s 47 prefectures over next 121 days before arriving in Tokyo for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on July 23.

It is noted that during the relay, about 10 thousand runners will carry the torch through the 47th Japanese prefectures, including remote islands. At the same time, there will be no spectators on the first segment in order to avoid crowds.

The first day was not without surprises: the torch went out at one of the moments, it had to be lit again. Japanese media write that the flame went out due to a faulty burner and was soon restored from a backup lamp.

The Tokyo Olympic Games will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
